Chapter Eleven

Laurel

“Don’t be silly.”

I wave away his compliment, my skin flushing, my body on fire. It’s been that way for most of the afternoon, ever since he pulled off his wet t-shirt, revealing that perfectly toned chest, the stunning tattoo taking my breath away… and if that makes me shallow, I honestly don’t care.

I haven’t been blind over the last few months. Brady is an extremely handsome man. He’s taller than Mitch, and surprisingly – given what Mitch did – he’s in better shape, too. I hadn’t realized exactly how much better until I caught sight of his rippling abs and firm pecs. The tattoo just added to the overall masculinity, I think. It gave him an edginess that I never realized existed, and suddenly I found myself in the middle of a full-blown inferno, centered right at my core, and although I knew I shouldn’t even be looking, the view was too good to miss.

And now, this man is calling me beautiful?

Me?

I don’t think Mitch ever called me beautiful.

He might have occasionally said I looked nice, or called me pretty… but beautiful?

“I’m not,” Brady says, and my eyes meet his.

Is this the wine talking? We’ve only had a glass each, so it can’t be that, can it?

Whatever the cause of his temporary insanity, I need to get us back on topic.

What were we talking about? I can’t remember…

It was something to do with plans… work… moving.

I take a breath, gulping down some wine, although I’m not sure alcohol is a good idea.

“I need to decide.”

“What about?”

“The future. Is it better to put my personal life ahead of my professional one?” That’s it. That’s what we were discussing. “I know I should make Addy my priority and stay here, where she knows everyone, but what if I can’t get a job?”

He moves a little closer, and that inferno heats up even more. If I’m not careful, I’m going to melt and form a puddle at his feet.

“Do you have to decide now?”

“No. But Hart’s Creek isn’t exactly overflowing with career opportunities for me.”

“Have you tried talking to Ezra?”

“Not about this, no. He’s been handling the sale of the gym, but I haven’t discussed the prospect of working for him. Obviously, he offered me a job when I came back from college, and I accepted, but then had to turn it down when I found out I was pregnant.”

He nods his head. “And you think he might have second thoughts about making a similar offer?”

“I don’t know. It’s possible that he’ll feel I let him down, though, don’t you think?”

“There’s only one way to find out. Ezra’s a fair man. He doesn’t hold grudges, so I’m pretty sure he’ll want to hear from you.”

“He might not need anyone, though.”

“Maybe not, but if he doesn’t, you could always look a little further afield. Alan Barton has a law practice in Willmont Vale.”

“I—I know he lives here, but I he’s not someone I’m familiar with. He’s my dad’s age, and I…”

“I know him, Laurel.
